Project Background: A landmark collaboration for a cleaner future

For decades, the District of Tofino discharged untreated sewage into the Pacific Ocean, causing significant environmental concerns. Situated in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and surrounded by traditional shellfish harvesting areas, this practice needed to change. The $77 million Tofino Wastewater Treatment Plant is the largest infrastructure investment the area has ever seen. It represents a significant step toward protecting Clayoquot Sound’s cultural, environmental, and recreational values.

This project brought together multiple stakeholders, including the federal government, the province, the district, and local First Nations, marking a historic collaboration for the community.

Challenges:

The primary challenge was constructing a facility capable of handling the wastewater needs of a community that had never before treated its sewage. The project required careful coordination between various stakeholders and the implementation of advanced technology to ensure environmental compliance.

Solution:

Greatario, in partnership with Balmoral Tanks and NAC Constructors Ltd., delivered a cutting-edge wastewater treatment facility. The tanks, designed to meet the stringent federal Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations, play a crucial role in ensuring that Tofino’s sewage is treated effectively before being discharged.

At Greatario, we are deeply passionate about the impact our projects have on local communities and the environment. This wastewater treatment plant in Tofino is more than just a piece of infrastructure; it’s a testament to our commitment to creating safer, cleaner, and more sustainable environments for future generations. We’re honored to play a role in preserving the beauty and health of Clayoquot Sound, and we take great pride in knowing our work will benefit both the community and the ecosystem for years to come
